Generative engine optimization vs. SEO: what changes when ChatGPT answers first.

Position One1 minute read

Search engine optimization was built for a page of ten blue links. AI assistants return one written answer, often naming only a handful of businesses. Generative engine optimization, sometimes called answer engine optimization, is the work of becoming one of those names. Much of it builds on good SEO, but the emphasis shifts.

What stays the same

AI assistants still rely on the web. Many retrieve live search results before answering, so a site that is crawlable, fast, well structured and genuinely useful still matters. Technical SEO, clear page titles and accurate structured data are the foundation for both.

“SEO wins a place on the page. GEO wins a place in the answer.”

What changes

AI answers reward clarity and corroboration. Pages that state plainly who you are, what you do, where, and for whom are easier to quote. Mentions of your business on other trusted sites, such as directories, reviews, local news and industry lists, help an assistant confirm what your own site says.

Keyword density matters less than answering the actual question. A page that answers "how much does it cost" or "how long does it take" in plain language is more likely to be cited than one that repeats a phrase.

  1. Entity clarity

Structured data, one plain description of the business and matching listings everywhere.

  2. Answer-ready pages

Pages that answer the question in the first sentence, then explain.

  3. Presence and measurement

Mentions where real answers live, and a monthly check of who gets cited.

How to start

Ask the major assistants the questions your customers ask, and note who gets named. Then fill the gaps: clear service pages, an FAQ written in your customers' words, consistent business details everywhere, and a plan to earn mentions on sites the assistants trust.

Our guide to getting cited by AI search goes deeper, and the AI search listings service page covers how we do this work.
