Facebook and Instagram ads for local businesses: a practical guide.

Position One1 minute read

Facebook and Instagram ads are sold through one system, Meta Ads Manager, and they can put your business in front of nearly any adult in your service area for a few dollars a day. That low barrier is exactly why so many businesses try them and quit. The platform will happily spend your budget; getting it to spend on the right people takes a plan.

Targeting: start with your customers, not interests

The strongest Meta audiences come from your own data: customer lists, website visitors and people who engaged with your page or videos. From those, Meta can build lookalike audiences of people who resemble your buyers. Interest targeting still has a place, but it is the least precise option.

Location matters just as much. Draw the radius around where you actually serve, exclude areas you do not, and let the feed deliver to the households inside it.

“In the feed, the creative is the targeting.”

Position One

Creative that stops the scroll

In the feed, the creative is the targeting. Short vertical video, a clear offer in the first two seconds, real people and real work outperform polished stock imagery. Every campaign should run several creative variations so the platform can find the winners and retire the rest.

Refresh creative on a schedule. The same ad shown to the same audience for months wears out, and costs climb as it does.

How to know if it works

Install the Meta pixel and the Conversions API so leads and sales are reported back even when browsers block tracking. Then judge the campaign on cost per lead and cost per sale, not likes. Social often assists a sale that closes later on search, so look at the full path, not just the last click.

The Meta advertising service page covers how we build and manage these campaigns end to end.
